適当な漢字がないようだが、まりをつく；杖をつく、手をつく；　息をつく　もある。漢字を使うとこれだけの区別があるが、かなだけ、あるいはもっと現実的 に耳で聞いたり話したりするときはこれらの区別はない。いいかえれば、中国語の漢字では発音上これらの区別があるが、日本語では区別がなく、すべて＜つく＞なの だ。

正確には、＜つく＞（＜つ＞にアクセントがある－着く、付く、就く、尽 く、憑く、点く ）と＜つく＞（＜く＞にアクセントがある－突く、衝く）の区別がある。中国語の四声に似た区別だ。
漢字を使うと意味が違う、あるいは微妙に違うようだが、大和言葉としての＜つく＞はかなり大雑把な動詞、よくいえば、かなり一般化、抽象化された語だ。もとの大きな意味は共通している（同源とか同根というが、いわば＜ur- つく＞だ）。＜ある場所にに近づく、近づける＞といったような意味だ。

一方英語の方は、代表として to attach がある。主には他動詞で使われるが、自動詞用法も可能。
