regardless

だいぶ前に nevertheless を取り上げたことがあるが、今回は regardless。＜less＞に相当する一語の日本語はない。副詞としては＜より少なく＞、形容詞としては＜より少ない＞。使い慣れると便利な言い方で、

Taro is less bight than Hanako. 　太郎は花子より頭がよくない。太郎は花子ほど頭がよくない。

さて、regardless だが、使い方としては of がついて

They'll do it regardless of the difficulty, bad weather / timing.

日本語ではよく＜にもかかわらず＞が使われる。 想定された特定の条件、状況なので＜the＞は必要。一般論であれば

Taro usually does it regardless of （any）difficulty, bad weather / timing.

でいい。不定冠詞の＜a＞は何かおかしい。regardless は単独で副詞としても可能。

Taro did it under the difficulty, bad weather / timing, regardless.

最後の例は regardless の代わりに、nevertheless, nonetheless、notwithstanding, however も可能。

実際のところ、regardless はあまり聞かない。なぜ regardlessを取り上げたかというと。中国語の＜不管＞、＜尽管＞を中英辞典でチェックしてみたら、一番目に regardless が出てきたからだ。例えば Cambridge Dictionary

＜regardless＞ではなく ＜irregardless＞となっているが、regardless = irregardless で否定的な意味に＞つられて＜ir-＞がついたもの。この現象は日本語にもある。

例文は、上の例文を除きなぜか＜不管＞ではなく＜尽管＞が出てくる。混乱がある。動詞 to regard は

to regard A as B    A を B とみなす。

これはよく使う。＜みなす＞は＜見なす＞で語源的には＜見る＞が関係している。一方 regard の方も＜見る＞に関連している。

だが、単に＜見る＞というよりは＜関係づけて見る＝見なす＞。＜不管＞、＜尽管＞の＜管＞も似たような意味がある。おおもとは＜筒状に楽器、管楽器＞だったようであるが、意味が大き変遷して＜掌管、管辖、管理等、to manage, to administer＞の意味になっている。

＜不管＞は regardless、not to regard as、＜見なさない＞で＜にもかかわらず＞に通じる。さらには＜ｘｘに関係なく＞とも訳せる。＜放任条件、状態＞の表示とも言える。

大雑把にいうと、

 

不管は主に譲歩用（regardless (of)) 。尽管は主に逆接用。だが例外もあり、Cambridge Dictionary の混乱もこれによると考えられる。

 

＜尽管＞の＜尽＞は ＜尽 (つ) くす＞だが＜管を尽くす＞、＜管尽くす＞とはどういう意味か。現代中国語では、上のように＜＜掌管、管辖、管理等、to manage, to administer＞の意味になっている＞。したがって

大幅に言い換えると、＜尽管＞は

肝心なのは＜尽管＞自体に＜ても＞、＜にもかかわらず＞、＜それでも＞の意味がないことで、これは言外にある。

では＜譲歩用＞はどうかというと、ここが肝心なのだが、譲歩の後ではそれに反する、というか＜にもかかわらず＞の逆接内容がくる。ややこしいのだ。

 

対比させると、順接では前半に＜ｘｘなので＞のような状況、理由が述べられ、その後にその状況、理由から順当に推測される内容がくる。

 

疲れたので、ひと休みする。

 

一方、逆接、譲歩では

 

疲れたが、ひと休みしない。

疲れたにもかかわらず、ひと休みしない。

ひと休みしない。

 

となる。上の例文で、日本人になじみにくいのは

＜as＞は普通順接用だ。＜Angry as he was＞と語順を変えないといけないのだろう。

＜with＞も普通順接用だ。ここでは＜still＞は必須だろう。

上の中国語の尽管の解説に出てくる＜虽然 suī rán＞も譲歩用と言っていい。

 日本語で＜にもかかわらず＞を使ってしまうと、後半は特に副詞あるいは接続詞はいらないが、中国語では普通＜“但是”、“可是”、“却”等＞が必要。これは中国語のレトリック。

 

ところで＜虽然 ＞は漢文の授業で出てきて＜にもかかわらず＞ではなく＜といえども＞と訳されていたよう記憶がある。一方＜にもかかわらず＞は英語の熟語 in spite of の訳で定着したのではないか？
