逆接と譲歩のあいまいさ－５、still

 この＜逆接と譲歩のあいまい＞シリーズの第一弾で

機会があれば譲歩表現とからめて still も検討する予定。  

”

と書いたので、忘れないうちに検討しておく。英語の still は多義語で、原意は形容詞の＜動かない、動きのない＞だろう。美術用語の still life は＜静物画＞と訳されているが、もちろん絵は音がしないが音のしない＜静かな＞ではなく、＜動かない、動きのない＞の方の＜静かな＞だ。＜静物画＞という日本語がピンとこないのは日本語の＜静＞は音がしない、気にならないほど小さい＜静かな＞が第一で、＜動きのない＞の方の＜静＞があまり使われないからだろう。譲歩表現の still は＜動きのない＞の方の＜静＞と大いに関係があり、＜静＞といよりは＜不動＞、＜不変＞、＜安定＞、＜定＞で、一般化が進んでいる、抽象度が高い＜定＞が適当だ。 still ＝定。still はin spite of や despite のspite と違って原意（＝定）が保たれているのでわかりやすい。これは逆に＜譲歩の意味＞を探るのに役立つ。

synonyms: motionless, unmoving, without moving, without moving a muscle, stock-still, immobile, like a statue, as if turned to stone, as if rooted to the spot, unstirring, stationary, at rest, at a standstill, inert, lifeless 

形用詞の方は基本的に＜動かない＞だ。

 

adverb（副詞）

 
1. up to and including the present or the time mentioned; even now (or then) as formerly.
"he still lives with his mother"
synonyms: up to this time, up to the present time, until now, even now, yet
 

2. nevertheless; all the same.
"I'm afraid he's crazy. Still, he's harmless"
synonyms: nevertheless, however, in spite of that, despite that, notwithstanding, for all that, all the same, even so, be that as it may, having said that, nonetheless, but, still and all, withal, natheless, howbeit
 

3. even (used with comparatives for emphasis).
"write, or better still, type, captions for the pictures"

副詞の方は形容しの＜派生＞と考えられるが、どうしてこのような派生的な意味が生まれ、使われ出し、固定したのか。

１．の説明は＜いまでも＞、＜いまにいたるまで＞でだが、 still は基本的に＜変わりないこと＞を含んでいる。＜変わりないこと＞という日本語は＜ない＞という否定語がつかわれるのでややこしい。＜変わりないこと＞は否定語＜ない＞がない＜（以前と）同じ状態を保っている＞と言い換えられる。

これまた否定の＜ず＞がついてしまうが

あいかわらず（あいもかわわらず）同じ状態を保っている

という言い方があるが、これが１．の still だ。 

さらに一歩進めると、ここが肝心なところなのだが、

まわりはいろいろ変わってしまっているが、あいかわらず同じ状態を保っている
まわりはいろいろ変わってしまっているにもかかわらず、あいかわらず同じ状態を保っている 

が副詞 still の一語に含まれている。

  

ここで注意したいのは副詞の still は物理的に＜動かない＞、＜変動がない＞の意ではなく、＜変化がなく、同じ状態を保っている＞ことで一般化されていることだ。したがって

 

太郎はまだ動いている。 Taro is still moving.

 では、太郎は動いているのだ。

 

これが 2. nevertheless; all the same に関連してくる。 nevertheless はややこしいが（別のところでややこしい説明を試みている）、all the same はまさしく

 

まわりはみないろいろ変わってしまっているが、あいかわらず同じ状態を保っている

 

の意なのだ。
