トリッキーな only if

 

前回のポストで少しだけふれたが、only if は＜でさえあれば、でさえすれば＞にならない。 前回のポストのこの部分を抜き出すと

even の代わりに only を使うと

Only if you have this,　

になるが

＜これがありさえすれば＞の意味にはならならないだろう。多分＜これがある場合だけ、のみ、に限り＞の意になる。

おもしろいので、少し良く調べてみた。大いに参考になるのは手元にある Cambridge Advanced 英漢辞典 (解説,は英語と中国語でされており英英辞典でもある) で、その箇所を抜き出すと

 

In formal written English, only or only if and its clause, can be placed first in the sentence. In the second part of the sentence , be , do, have. etc, come before the subject and the main part of the verb:

 

Only in Paris do you find the bars like this.
Only if these conditions are fulfilled can the application proceed to the next stage.

 

二番目は

 

これらの条件が満たされた場合にのみ、次の手続きに進むことができる。

 

の意で＜これらの条件が満たされさえすれば＞の意ではない。また、おそらく

 

 If only these conditions are fulfilled can the application proceed to the next stage.

 

も＜これらの条件が満たされさえすれば＞の意にはならないだろう。内容は、if が使われてれているが仮定ではなくある条件のもとでの話だ。＜これらの条件＞の＜条件＞のことではない。だから

 

これらが満たされた場合にのみ、次の手続きに進むことができる。

 

としても、ある条件のもとでの話であることに変わりはない。

 

注）冒頭にに In formal written English とあるので、口語では語順が変わる、または別の言い方をするのでないか。

 

数学だか論理学だか忘れたが、if and only if (iff) というのがあり、これも参考になる。
