３）－２　英語の接頭辞＜ex-＞はイタリア語では＜es-＞

 

英語の接頭辞＜ex-＞はイタリア語では一部の常用語を除き、大半は＜s-＞ではなく＜es-＞になる。これはかなりある。英語の接頭辞＜ex-＞自体ラテン語の接頭辞＜ex-＞で本家なのだ。当然英語の＜ex-ｘｘｘｘ＞はラテン語起源の語で多くはラテン語の直接の子孫であるイタリア語にも相当語がある。

 

＜ex-＞は英語の＜out of＞にほぼ相当。＜out of＞に動詞はないが意味としては＜ｘｘから出る＞＜ｘｘから出す＞で上の英語の ＜away, off, out＞とは似て非なるものだが、混乱もある。

 

正規の道＜から外（はず）れる （way, off, out）＞で概して悪い、好ましくない意味になり、この＜悪い、好ましくない意味＞は＜s-＞に大いに関係している。

 

一方＜ex-＞は英語の＜out of＞、日本語の＜ｘｘから出る（出す）＞は基本的に中立。

to exact - esatto は直接には＜出る＞の意味がない。英語の to exact の語源を調べてみると、ラテン語の exigere （イタリア語 esigere）。関連語に to extract （抽出する）があり、これは exact に関連づけられる。 esigere = to demand, to require  (strongly)

 

to exaggerate - esagerare （誇張する、大げさに言う、伝える）。ラテン語は exaggerare で元の意味は to heap up （積み上げる）。

to escape 　＜－ excappare （ラテン語）　　イタリア語は escapare ではなく scappare。この scappare 耳で聞いていかにも＜逃げ出す＞という響きだ。

to excavate - scavare  （掘る、to dig） escavare という語はない。

to exceed - superare 　＜－ super で exceed とは直接関係ない。また発音の関係からか escedere という語はなく eccedere になる。だがeccedere = to exceed ではない。

で＜まさる＞というよりは＜行き過ぎる＞。

＜exceed＞の語源はラテン語の excedere 。イタリア語の cedere は＜ゆずる＞だ。to exceed は＜ｘｘよりまさる＞、to go out (beyond) the limit, the boundary で＜ゆずる＞と関係なくはない。
